South Industries 29XC rims on i9 Hydra hubs.
Recently I had the privilege to build a very special set of carbon XC mountain bike wheels.
The brief was simple:
- Keep weight as low as possible.
- Use carbon rims that have a lifetime warranty.
- Use fast-engagement Industry Nine Hydra hubs.
South Industries, the Cape Town based designers and manufacturers of carbon bicycle rims, was immediately the first recommendation for hoops.
Their 29″ XC / marathon rims sport an internal width of 28mm, look amazing, and weigh only 370g. It doesn’t hurt that stock is readily available – something that not many other premium brands can boast about in South Africa these days.
The i9 hubs were also easy to get hold of, now that Bicycle Power Trading is the new nominated importer and distributor in SA, and arrived within 48 hours of ordering.
Light bladed spokes and newly launched Pillar AB-Lock self-locking brass nipples hold everything together, keep weight low and provide exceptional durability.
It never hurts that they look so good too!
