I’m talking about wheels for enduro or downhill, e-bikes and bikes that will carry a load or do mega miles.
What do you need in a wheelset?
- Durable hubs that use sealed cartridge bearings, strong axles, a solid freehub mechanism (interchangeable between Shimano 11 & 12-speed freehubs and xD driver) and easily available parts – and are easy to work on with few or no special tools.
- Strong, wide enough, tubeless-ready rims that will resist buckling and denting during rough riding and hard impacts, and covered by an exceptional warranty.
- Premium quality double butted spokes and brass nipples that won’t corrode or seize to the spoke threads.
- A wheel builder who will assemble the wheels with precision and care, ensuring that the spoke tensions are balanced so that the wheels remain as true as possible for as long as possible – and who is committed to providing world-class after-sales service and backup.
I’ve built wheels like this:
Assembled entirely by hand, I often use Stan’s Flow EX3 rims, Lyne AMP HD, Raceface ARC HD or Spank 359 rims. I choose to lace these to Hope, Spank, DT Swiss or other robust hubs, using Pillar double butted spokes and black brass DSN nipples.

When I build wheels like these, I apply the rim tape and install tubeless valves, ensuring the best possible user experience.
I also give a lifetime warranty on the spokes and nipples, as well as on my workmanship.
