A premium combination – Wheels of the day!

carbon MTB wheels

I’ve built a few carbon mountain bike wheelsets lately with very similar specs, and I’m convinced this is a superb combination, worthy of the most discerning cyclist or racer.

The parts

DT Swiss 240S hubs, lightweight carbon rims and bladed spokes, with brass nipples.
They certainly look the part, and at around 1350g for a 29er wheelset, are light enough for almost any weight weenie, while remaining durable and serviceable.

Affordable premium

You’d be hard-pressed to find a better set of wheels than these pictured above, even for a lot more money. At the time of writing this, the above combination can be had for between R28-35k depending on options.

The rims my customers have chosen come from well respected brands such as South Industries, Nextie and Stan’s NoTubes.

Of course, I assembled the wheels by hand, meticulously and very carefully – ensuring appropriate and even spoke tensions and wheels that are true and round to within less than a millimeter.

The South Industries 29XC rims are around 370g per rim and are 28mm wide internal. They have a lifetime warranty and crash replacement policy, and are locally made, so it’s great to support a South African business.

The rims from Nextie (China) come in many widths and build options to suit your taste and requirements – from 25mm inner width to 30mm and wider, with various finish and graphics options. They have a 3 year warranty and crash replacement policy.

The downside is that the Nextie rims have a 4-6 week lead time.

Before you invest in an expensive set of carbon wheels, make sure you know all your options and choose the set best suited to your taste, budget and requirements.
