When you commission a new set of wheels, your wheel builder needs to know what axle spacing your bike uses.
Many people don’t know this detail, so here’s a bit of a guide to introduce you to the concepts of QR (quick release), thru-axle and BOOST.
Rather than re-invent the wheel and re-write the entire article, I’ll point you to the info on BikeRadar.com.

In summary:
- Road bikes which use rim brakes mostly use 100mm x QR front and 130mm x QR rear axles.
- Disc brake road bikes mostly use 100mm x 12mm thru-axles front and 142mm x 12mm thru-axles rear.
- Older MTB’s use 100mm x QR front and 135mm x QR rear.
- Newer MTB’s use 100mm x 15mm thru-axles front and 142mm x 12mm thru-axles rear.
- Many mountain bikes you can buy today use BOOST spacing, which is 110mm x 15mm front and 148mm x 12mm rear thru-axles.
- Some MTB’s use a BOOST width rear hub with QR end caps. These are often referred to as BOOST 141 or BOOST QR. The rear axle end caps are swapped for QR end caps in this case.
