Ever heard something that sounds like sand inside your rims? Chances are, if you’re using alloy nipples, they’re corroding and falling apart inside the wheel.
Galvanic Corrosion
This is very common, especially in carbon wheels, and the reason I recommend building wheels with brass nipples, which don’t suffer from this phenomenon called “galvanic corrosion“.
I often experience this when wheels are brought in for some maintenance or to fix a wobble – and the nipples refuse to turn. They corrode and seize onto the spokes, making it impossible to true the wheel. I’m left with no choice but to cut out the spokes and replace them. Ouch.
Need some advice on a repair or new build? Get in touch, just remember, I will ALWAYS recommend brass nipples.
