This week I had a pretty cool build – some wheels for a single speed road bike – essentially a track bike, with only one gear.
The brief was to build a set of wheels with the following characteristics:
- Good looks
- Low weight
- Excellent stiffness and durability
- Excellent value for money
So that’s what I did. The wheels comprise the following parts: 28 DT Swiss Competition double butted spokes per wheel, brass nipples, Novatec track hubs that can take a cog or freewheel on either side of the rear hub, and Alex CX28 rims which are tubeless ready.
Incidently, the Alexrims website lists the ERD of the CX28 rims as 582.2mm, but I measured it at 586mm. Other wheel builders beware.
These came in at a selling price of under R5000, so a great upgrade option for anyone building a fixie, upgrading a Simple Sam or Rook bicycle – or any old track bike for that matter.
