Wheels for Women’s Month
Last week I was commissioned to build a set of wheels for a local lady mountain biker. She asked specifically for red rims and purple hubs. Naturally I recommended the Spank Oozy Trail295 rims and Hope Pro4 hubs. She agreed 🙂
I laced the rims to the hubs with double butted Wheelsmith spokes and black brass nipples for good looks and superb durability. I always lubricate the spoke threads with a light grease to make building (and any future maintenance) easy. The rims are inherently strong, so building these wheels to a high and even tension is simple. The spokes are laced in a 3-cross pattern.
What makes wheels like these such a pleasure is actually living with them. Installing tubeless tyres is an absolute cinch and using Maxxis Crossmarks, they aired up right away, with a normal track pump. No CO2 cartridges or compressors needed. The Bead Bite technology that Spank employs also ensures that if there is a sudden loss of tyre pressure, the tyre stays seated, making re-inflation easy.
The Hope-Spank combination remains one of my favorite to build and ride and I’ll keep on recommending them all day long.
