Recently bicycle component and accessories brand OneUp announced their new mountain bike hubs.
Along with countless others in the industry, they’ve adopted the battle-tested star-ratchet system, made famous by DT Swiss, although with their own tweaks to the design.
They’ve kept it simple, which I love, and have opted to machine the drive ring into the hub shell, rather than press or thread in a separate part to do the job of holding the inboard ratchet ring in place.
Available now in South Africa in black only, and BOOST only, they’re competing head-to-head with the likes of DT Swiss themselves, and with other players like Hope and their Pro5 hubs.
OneUp is claiming to lead the pack in terms of lowest weight for a classic, j-bend spoke hub set, which will appeal to the weight-weenies.
Riders and mechanics alike will appreciate their easily-serviced design, and decision to use high-quality Enduro ABEC-5 bearings.
Their 44-tooth ratchets equal the 8.2 degree engagement of the previous-generation Pro4 hubs from Hope, but beat the 36t option which comes standard with the DT Swiss 350 hubs.
Hope’s Pro5 hubs sport a much faster 6-pawl freehub these days, in the race for faster engagement.
Nobody, in my humble opinion, needs faster engagement than 44t – although I’m sure some will want to fight me on this.
Overall, a solid and high-quality option to consider for your next BOOST-spaced MTB wheel build, at a similar price to the current Hope Pro5 and DT 350 offerings.
Of course, the hubs are available with your choice of Shimano 11-speed HG, Shimano 12-speed Microspline and SRAM xD driver freehubs.
I’m hoping demand is good so that they can justify importing some of the more interesting colourways as well.
Would you spend your hard-earned cash on a set of these?
