I’m often asked why should someone have custom wheels built as opposed to buying a set off-the-shelf. Here are my top 3 reasons.
Custom wheels are custom.
This means that the wheels are built just for you. An experienced wheel builder will take into account your weight, riding style, taste and budget, and recommend the best combination of parts for your custom wheel set. Chances are, nobody in the world will have a wheel set just like yours.
Custom wheels will outlast stock wheels.
Custom wheels are assembled by experienced craftsmen, who take time and care in putting your wheels together. This means your wheels will be stronger and more reliable in the long run, and need less maintenance. When they do need something repaired, like a broken spoke, this is generally easier and more cost effective as most custom wheels use industry standard parts which are more easily available.
Custom wheels are the best upgrade for your bike.
They’ll most likely be lighter, stronger and much better-looking than your stock wheels. This means less chance of a ride-ending mechanical failure. We know how unpleasant those are. It also means you may go faster. Most aftermarket rims used in custom builds are optimized for tubeless tyres, minimizing the chance of punctures and allowing lower tyre pressures for better comfort and traction.
Do custom wheels cost more than an off-the-shelf set? Yes, in most cases.
Why? Your wheel builder has honed his skills through countless hours behind the truing stand. The rims, hubs and spokes which make up your new wheels are probably premium items from some of the world’s best manufacturers. It takes time, care and precision to put them together. Trust me, this is a process you just can’t rush.
Is it worth it? Definitely. Not convinced? Let’s discuss. I’m waiting for your call.
