So you’re planning on ordering a new set of wheels for your pride and joy. Consider these 3 things before you spend your hard-earned cash:

  1. Buy wheels that will outlast your current bike.
There are so many “standards” in the bicycle industry these days, and many apply to wheels. What axle standards fit your current bike? Quick release? Thru-axle? BOOST? Bolt-through. 142×12?
Make sure your hubs are convertible between at least some of these standards, so that if you change your frame you’ll be able to use the wheels you’ve invested in.

  2. Black is not the new black.
Take the opportunity to add a splash of colour to your ride. Hubs are available in a plethora of anodised colours, as well as black and white. Spokes are available freely in black and silver. Brass nipples are available in black and silver, alloy ones in all the colours of the rainbow. How about the classic all-silver look? (My current favourite)

  3. How easy will it be to live with the wheels?
Hubs with cup-and-cone bearings need regular maintenance. If this isn’t done, the bearing surfaces inside the hub will become damaged and are normally irreparable. Better hubs use sealed cartridge bearings which are easy to replace and tend to last longer than traditional loose bearings. Are spare spokes easily available and affordable to get? Bladed and straight-pull spokes are often tricky, or expensive. What kind of guarantee do the wheels come with?

Make sure you think beyond what the wheels cost and consider the entire ownership experience. Good wheels should last many years.
I’m looking forward to helping you with the perfect set of wheels for your bike. Don’t hesitate to get in touch.
