I now offer wheel builds with NEXTIE rims, which I source directly from them in China. These rims are superb quality and are very good value for money.

In September I landed my first order of rims from the Chinese manufacturer. I imported some gravel rims in 30mm and 45mm deep profile, a set of lightweight, 25mm inner width 29er cross country mountain bike rims and some 35mm wide 29er enduro rims.

I built the 30mm gravel rims to a set of Hope Pro4 hubs, the 25mm wide MTB rims to Hope and Lefty hubs for a Cannondale and the enduro rims also onto Hope hubs.

So far the feedback from the riders has been very positive. From a wheel builder’s perspective, the Nextie rims have been easy to build up to recommended tension and the finish on all of the rims has been flawless.

Anyone can buy the rims from the Nextie website but I like to take care of that hassle for my customers.

Pricing

The prices listed on their website are in dollars. At the current ROE, multiply that price by 15 to get to ZAR, remember to add 15% for VAT and throw some money in for shipping.

It actually works out pretty much the same if you import your own set, or let me do it for you, as I typically try and bring in 6-8 rims at a time.

I typically place an order with the factory once I have orders for 6 or more rims.

Options

Pretty much all kinds of rims are available, from light weight XC rims to burly enduro rims, from aero road rims to gravel rims. You can choose the colour of the graphics, or opt to have rims with no graphics. You can also choose your spoke count to match the hubs you already have, or wish to buy.

Lead time

Typical lead time from date of ordering is around a month for the rims to arrive from China. This is obviously out of anyone’s control as the rims need to clear customs, which is sometimes an unpredictable process.

Warranty

As with all of the wheels I build, I guarantee the workmanship for a lifetime and have a lifetime spoke replacement policy (except for major impact and crash damage). Nextie warranties their rims for 2 or 3 years, depending on the model. The new “Premium” range uses T700 and T800 carbon construction and has a 3 year warranty.

The build

As with all of the wheels I build, I lace, tension and true these by hand, to precise and even tensions – this ensures that your wheels are strong, reliable and will probably outlast your current bike.
